So I’ve owned my HP iPAQ 614c for just over a week now, it’s been half way around the world with me, so I’ve a very good idea of how it works, what’s good, what’s bad and what’s ok. I’ve actually purchased this device with my own hard earned cash, so it’s not a handout or freebie.

Why did I buy it? I wanted a device that had GPS, 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth all built into a single unit to replace my aging iPAQ 6915, and the 614 appeared to fit the bill.(跟我想法一样,612/614最大的优点是全功能和128RAM)

First off, the raw specifications:

and then a quick tour of the device. Starting from the top there is a tiny button that toggles between the sound being on, and in vibrate mode. I find myself using this alot more than I thought I would when I first discovered it!

Moving to the left hand side of the device as you would hold it, there is an OK button, the three-way thumb wheel (一开始我还以为只有上下两个方向,其实这个拇指轮也可以当选择键用的), and the HP voice commander button. Down the bottom you can see a space to attach a lanard (not supplied), and also the stylus. The three way thumb wheel works very well, allowing true one handed operation.

Moving to the bottom of the device, there is the reset button and the mini USB port which allows for charging and also connecting the included headphones.

and finally on the right hand side is the camera button, and a mysterious port that has a soft plastic cover and on the HP Quickspecs is identified as Test port cover (do not remove)

On the back of the unit is the 3MP camera with auto focus and Snapfish upload option, and the rear door which houses the battery, SIM slot and Micro SD slot. This means you must remove the battery if you wish to change the Micro SD card. The Micro SD slot is SDHC compatible.

The included stylus slides out to become a very usable size, with nice tactile feel.

The device is a little bigger than I thought it might be, however is significantly lighter than my iPAQ 6915. The screen is bright and large, and with a combination of the keys and XT9 predictive text I find it easy to create and reply to emails and SMS messages. The XT9 predictive text is one of the best I’ve come across, offering completed words in the bottom of the screen as you type. It’s virtually always given me the correct longer words when I’ve been approx 50% through the word, so I think it does offer significant time savings.

The pictures below are comparing the device in size to the HP iPAQ 514 and the HP iPAQ 6915.

One of the best added value utilities HP provides is the HP setup assistant. This allows you to create a profile on your desktop, and when your iPAQ syncs for the first time you can simply download all the settings to it. This worked far better than I had hoped for, I had a 514 profile and I was simply able to download that to the 614c. This meant in around a minute the device was fully configured for my owner information, push email Exchange, Gmail, Wifi networks, speed dial numbers and mobile favourites, without ever having to enter anything onto the 614c.

HP have also included a button which flicks between landscape and portrait mode. I find myself using the landscape mode if I’m stuck at an airport and wanting to browse the web.

The scroll wheel on the bottom of the keyboard is an interesting idea, it’s very similiar to the iPOD wheel, with one important difference. As well as scrolling clockwise or counter clockwise, you can also rest your finger on the number 5 and then move it up/down, left or right. Holding your finger, for example, over the key 2 allows you to scroll up through a menu or a webpage. I did find a problem with the scroll wheel when composing messages, unless you are very careful it’s easy to accidently scroll around your message, and the first day I had the device I often found myself accidently typing replies into wrong areas of the message. It is possible to disable the scroll wheel via the control panel or by press and holding the OK button. Since getting used to the device a little more I’ve not had as many problems with this, once I worked out what was causing it! The actual keys are large and easy to use, I find it much easier to compose emails on this device than I do on the iPAQ 514. (智慧滚轮适应了确实很好用)

There is a 3 MP camera with auto focus, it’s not the fastest device at autofocusing, but takes a good enough picture for the occasional user.

HP have installed a number of value add applications onto the device including HP Voice Commander, HP Voice reply, Clearvue PDF viewer, HP shortcuts, Google Maps, Google Search, HP Photosmart Mobile (with Snapfish upload) and Sun Java.

The version of Google maps installed is an old v1 product, so I would recommend any 614c users upgrade straight away to the v2 product. This worked quickly and easily with the inbuilt GPS to locate myself.

The HP Voice commander is an interesting application that seems to work very well. It allows you to speak commands to your iPAQ, it supports over 20 speaker independent commands and does not need any training. Things that you can do include dialing contacts by name or number, speed dial, composing and reading SMS and emails and call managing (redial, call back and call history). You can also use the application to play music, record notes and start applications. Examples of phone use include “Call Greg Hilton mobile” or “dial 123-456-7890”. For email you can tell it to “read email” and control it with commands like next, abort or reply.

The HP shortcuts are a simple application to quickly launch applications from the today screen. As an SPB Pocket Plus user I won’t be using this application much.

I installed my copy of TomTom 6 to the device, and from a cold start it had located satellites and got a fix in under a minute. The device has assisted GPS which means in certain low GPS signal situations the device will download data over the air to improve GPS performance. Unlike the 6915 there doesn’t seem to be any options on the 614 that allow a user to configure when and how this is done. The picture below is actually taken from inside my house, underneath a sky light.

The battery is quoted as having up to 4 hours talk time and 250 hours standby. It has certainly never run out for me, even when travelling and using push email for a day, and using Internet explorer a fair bit as well as making a number of calls. (这里明显夸大了电池的能力!一般电池是要一天一冲的!)

There are one or two niggles I have with the device. The first is HP appears to have removed the ability to add either Messaging or Calendar to the start menu. They presumably want you to go through the today screen to access these functions. The second is the CD includes references to Mobile Data Connection software, which would allow your laptop to use the iPAQ as a modem for high speed internet access. The web site referenced on the CD doesn’t have the software, and on speaking to HP it doesn’t look like it will ever appear.

So in summary the device does everything I wanted it to, and the acid test will be to see if I ever slip my SIM card back into my 514! The 614c is a little larger length wise than I was expecting, it certainly can fit inside a jeans pocket, however you do notice it is there a little more than you would a smaller device like the 514. Indeed HP seem to be concerned about people shoving this into a pocket as a sticker on the screen warns “cracked screens due to improper handling are not covered under warranty. Do not compress, hit, bend or drop your HP iPAQ. Remove your HP iPAQ from pants pockets before sitting down. Always store your HP iPAQ in its protective case”. Unfortunately HP do not include a protective case! The quick setup guide mentions a screen protector, but there was not one in my box.

So all in all a good device, that ticks all the boxes for me, and I will certainly be keeping it as my day to day device.
