Question:

I saw in your description of the iPaq 612 that it has the GPS chipset SiRFstar III. Are you sure that this is 100% correct? No offence of course, but i saw some other descriptions saying that it has A-GPS.

And the question is: Will I need an Internet connection (network subscription = extra cost) to use my GPS?

Answer:

Unless HP itself is confused, I’m pretty sure the iPaq 612 uses the SiRFstar III chip.
I think you are a little bit confused with the terms. A-GPS and GPS are not two separate, different things. A-GPS is simply a term used to describe a method which the device uses to help get an initial GPS location. As you may know, getting an initial lock can sometimes be difficult because of obstructions like tall buildings and foliage. Depending on how A-GPS is deployed on the device, you may require a small data packet to be transferred from a server–that’s where your data charge will come in. Once the actual GPS gets a lock, there are no data charges to speak of. It’s all between your device and the positioning satellites from then on.

And if don’t wish to use this initial lock assistance, you don’t have to. You can simply turn off A-GPS and depend entirely on the SiRFstar III chip to get a lock.
