HP iPAQ 600 Business Navigator Series and HP iPAQ 900 Business Messenger Series – Common Global Positioning System (GPS) Issues using Google Maps
Release Date: 2008-09-09
Last Updated: 2008-11-19
There are some GPS issues using the Google Maps application on the HP iPAQ 600 Business Navigator Series and the HP iPAQ 900 Business Messenger Series. Some users are not aware of the working of Google Maps software and the GPS chipset on these devices.
Some of the common reported issues with GPS and Google Maps with their resolutions are as follows:
1. Why do I need a data connection to use Google Maps?
Google Maps requires an Internet connection to download the map for a specific location from one of the Google’s servers. Without a data connection, it is impossible to connect to the Google’s server and render maps.
2. Why is My Location (beta) not compatible with the device?
If the GPS is not enabled on the HP iPAQ before using the My Location feature, an error message “Your handset doesn’t seem to be compatible with My Location (beta) feature? is displayed.
My Location typically uses a form of software-based assisted GPS (aGPS) which requires the cellular network to transmit special information about the location of the cellular towers. If the network does not transmit this information, then this feature does not work using aGPS. The location of the device can be tracked by enabling traditional GPS and waiting for a lock.
Before using the My Location feature in Google Maps for the iPAQ device, the user should enable the GPS on the iPAQ device.
To enable GPS for Google Maps on the iPAQ 900 Business Messenger Series device, tap Start > Google Maps > Menu > Use GPS .
To use the My Location feature tap Start > Google Maps > My Location .
3. How do I use traditional GPS?
-
For iPAQ 600 Business Navigator Series: tap Menu > Track Location
-
For iPAQ 900 Business Messenger Series: tap Menu > Use GPS Under
Google Maps will begin acquiring a satellite lock and will jump to the current location of the device once a lock has been acquired.
4. Why cannot I get a (traditional) GPS lock?
GPS requires access to clear skies. Overhead obstructions such as roofs, thick cloud cover, or high buildings can prevent the GPS signal from reaching the device.
Similarly, the location of the device in a vehicle can have a profound effect on the ability to get a lock. Placing the device lower in the vehicle or under the vehicle’s roof can prevent GPS signals from reaching the device. It is recommended to have the device placed on the dashboard using the car mount accessory while using GPS in a car. Alternatively, an external GPS antenna can be purchased. This can be placed on the car’s roof and then can be attached to the device for better signal acquisition. It is advised that Google Maps should not be interacted with while operating a motor vehicle.
5. What can I do to reduce the time to get a GPS lock?
GPS locks will require more time if the device is mobile as it tries to acquire a lock. It is advised to wait in a stationary position free from overhead obstructions. This helps reducing the time to get a GPS lock.
Additionally, in iPAQ 900 Business Messenger Series, the out-of-date GPS data will require that the device waits for all or most of the GPS satellite sequence to complete before it can calculate a position. The user can get more up-to-date GPS data using HP iPAQ GPS QK Position application.
To start iPAQ GPS QK Position application:
- Tap Start > Programs > HP iPAQ GPS QK Position .
- If the ephemeris file has expired, tap the Download Now box to update the file.
6. Why does the GPS on the device not perform as well as my standalone GPS?
Standalone GPS systems use specialized chipsets that facilitate satellite acquisition and allow for more accurate location. The chipsets are intended only for GPS acquisition and thus can be designed to efficiently acquire a GPS lock. Additionally, the GPS antenna in standalone devices is typically more tuned for detecting GPS signals.
